Journeys to the islands

A day's excursion to Porto Santo

Porto SantoVisit the small neighbouring island of Porto Santo with its 9 km long sandy beach, small villages, mountainous landscape and of course the house of Christopher Columbus, that has been turned into a museum. Before his great discovery journeys, Columbus lived with his wife on Porto Santo; his son Diego was born here. The sandy beach is not just an attractive sight and very enjoyable, the sands actually have healing qualities. As a team of scientists from one of Portugal's top universities confirmed, their mineral content helps against rheumatism and other bone complaints. That is, if you feel like burying yourself in the sand... It is possible to make a bus excursion (not inclusive) when arriving on Porto Santo or to visit the sights by taxi (also not inclusive). There is also excellent public transport on the island.

To the 'Ilhas Desertas' (Deserted Islands) by sailing boat

Ilhas DesertasA day's excursion by sailing boat from Funchal to the 'Ilhas Desertas'. The 'deserted islands', are a nature reserve, which is why nobody is allowed to live there. You can find rare bird species there, and occasionally one can spot seals, that used to exist in abundance around Madeira and its neighbouring islands. Both Porto Santo and the Ilhas Desertas are governed from Madeira and are administratively part of it. At the Ilhas Desertas you can sometimes even see dolphins or whales, but even if you don't, this will be a nature excursion never to forget. There is always a marine biologist on board, who can tell you all about the local flora and fauna.

Price: € 80 per person, incl. experienced guide, insurance, lunch, drinks, and € 2 donation for the monk seals conservation programme.

Prices are net, in Euro and subject to change.
