The island's main town has a lot to offer – narrow cobbled streets and pretty squares (praças) invite you to stroll slowly around the historical centre and then sit down and relax in one of the many cafés and restaurants. There is, of course, a lot of sightseeing to be done – from historical buildings such as the Sé Cathedral, built between 1493-1514, or the old city fortress dating back to the 16th century, to the Museum of Modern Art and the Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art) with its collection of Flemish Old Masters (Dieric Bouts, Gerard David etc.). There is a great photography museum, as well as a number of historical private houses now turned into museums. Particularly beautiful are the gardens and parks of Funchal, such as the Botanical Gardens, the Municipal Garden, and the garden of the Quinta Magnolia. Sé church
