PrainhaAs Madeira is originally a volcanic island, it consists mainly of a mountain range descending as cliffs into the sea. As a result, there is only one sandy beach, the black volcanic beach "Prainha" near Caniçal in the South-Eastern corner of the island. The other natural beaches consist of pebbles. However, almost every place along the South Coast and a number of villages on the North Coast have artificial "beaches", which offer easy access to the sea by means of steps or ladders. They also provide sun beds and parasols, changing cabins, showers and toilets, and more often than not natural pools. These beaches are supervised, and the facilities are spotless. Among the most famous of these are the Lido beach in Funchal, the Ponta Gorda (also in the Lido area of Funchal) and the swimming facilities at Porto Moniz and Seixal on the North Coast.
